When Mr. Henry Dashwood died during the 19th century, leaving all of his money to his first wife's son John Dashwood, his second wife and her three daughters were left with no home and very little money. Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret were invited to stay with their cousin, the Middletons, at Barton Park. Elinor was sad to leave their home at Norland because she was in love with Edward Ferrars, the brother-in-law of her half-brother John. However, once at Barton Park, Elinor and Marianne met many new people, including the retired officer and bachelor Colonel Brandon, and the noble and reckless John Willoughby, who rescued Marianne after she twisted her ankle running down the hills of Barton in the rain, and together the two shows off their interests to one another, until Willoughby suddenly announces that he must leave to London on business, leaving Marianne lovesick and miserable. Meanwhile, Anne and Lucy Steele, two recently discovered relations of Lady Middleton's mother, Mrs. Jennings, arrived at Barton Park as guests of the Middletons. Lucy was being friendly to Elinor and told her that she has been secretly engaged to Mr. Ferrars. Elinor thought that Lucy was referring to Edward's younger brother Robert, but Elinor was shocked and hurt to know that Lucy was actually referring to Edward. After that, Elinor and Marianne traveled to London with Mrs. Jennings. Marianne was excited to meet her love Willoughby, but when she saw him at a party in town with another lady, he cruelly shut her off and then sent her a letter denying that he never had any feelings for her. Colonel Brandon told Elinor of Willoughby's history of his cold hearted and seductions. Mrs. Jennings confirmed that Willoughby, who spent all of his fortune, has become engaged to the wealthy Miss Grey. Meanwhile, the Dashwood sisters visited family friends at Cleveland on their way home from London. At Cleveland, Marianne felt ill. Upon hearing of her illness, Willoughby came to visit, trying to explain his misbehaving and wanted her forgiveness. Elinor was feeling sorry for him and shared his story with Marianne, who finally realized that she was a being a fool with Willoughby. Mrs. Dashwood and Colonel Brandon arrived at Cleveland and were relieved to know that Marianne has begun to recover. When the Dashwoods returned to Barton, they learnt from their servant that Lucy Steele and Mr. Ferrars were engaged. They assumed that he meant Edward Ferrars, and were unsurprised, but Edward himself soon arrived and corrected their misunderstanding. It was Robert. Plus, Edward was finally free to propose to his beloved Elinor. After that, Marianne and Colonel Brandon became engaged as well. The couples lived together at Delaford and remained in close touch with their mother and younger sister at Barton Cottage.
