Students who entered The University of Memphis or any other institution as beginning freshmen in fall 1984 or later, are required to possess competency in computer literacy before graduating. Competency may be gained by either passing grades in designated coursework or passing a specially designed test. Courses that fulfill this requirement are specified by the college in which the student is enrolled for a degree. Students interested in taking the test should consult their college dean.
The computer has become a fundamental resource for all college learning in all disciplines. Students seeking admission to Texas A&M International University must demonstrate basic computer literacy, a requirement satisfied by at least one-half high school credit in computer literacy, taken as part of a student's college preparation program. (Keyboarding will not satisfy this requirement.) An entering student not able to show mastery of basic computer skills will enroll in CIS 1305, or similar course, before beginning the third semester of college study.
To the greatest extent possible and wherever practical, computer and information technologies should be integrated into general education courses and generally throughout the curriculum. Research shows that students who do their papers on the word processor generally perform better than students who do not. College graduates should be able to do the following: (a) use word processing; (b) access and manipulate spreadsheets and databases; (c) use printed and computerized resources to locate information; and (d) use and prepare multimedia applications. Students who enter Delaware State University unfamiliar with using the computer should enroll in computer literacy courses such as Survey of Computer Science (35-107) and Basic Computer Applications
