The Difficulty in Quitting Smoking)
Smoking is terrible. Statistically speaking, smoking is the most dangerous thing that we can choose to do with our own health. Yet so many people still smoke. The author will confess that he too is a smoker, but as a smoker, I feel shame about it under certain circumstances. It is a personal choice in my life, yet there is nothing but social pressure to conform and quit. Smokers make up 23% of the Canadian population, most likely more as a smokers was defined as someone who smokes pack a day (Statistics Canada, 2000). There must be more smokers out there that feel this malaise with me. Along with this distress, goes the equally stressing issues of our own desires (in a great many circumstances) to smoke, to quit and the difficulties involved. All of these stresses tend to make
smokers want to quit, while at the same time lighting a cigarette
ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
Smoking)
Some people neither care about their own nor other people’shealth. People do
things everyday without caring how it will affect them or others. One of the things is
smoking openly, especially in public places. Approximately one-fifth of all deaths in the
United States can be blamed on smoking. Cigarette smoke delivers more than forty
known cancer-causing chemicals. There is also compelling evidence that regular
exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke threatens the health of those who don't smoke.
Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in our society. In fact, nearly one
in five deaths in the United States results from the use of tobacco. Based on research
from the American Cancer Society, each year smoking claims more than 400,000 lives in
the US. Almost half of all smokers between the ages of thirty-five and sixty-nine die
prematurely. Smokers could be losing an average of twenty to twenty five years of their
life.
When you inhale the smoke of a cigarette, you are letting loose a chemical parade
that will march through some of your body's vital organs like brain, lungs, heart and
blood vessels. Your body is exposed to chemicals that cause cancer, coronary heart
disease, stroke, and respiratory conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
Smoking is also linked to a variety of disorders and conditions including the slowed
healing of wounds and infertility. One of the most powerful chemicals is nicotine.
Nicotine is what keeps you smoking. The carbon monoxide you inhale from tobacco
smoke replaces oxygen in your blood cells, robbing your heart, brain and the rest of your
body of this life-giving element. Smoking also deadens your senses of taste and smell so
food is not as good as it once was.
A burning cigarette is a health risk to everyone in the same room. The scientific
evidence of tobacco hazards is strongest for smokers themselves. However, there is
compelling evidence that regular exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke threatens the
health of those who do not smoke. Because of how tobacco burns, secondhand smoke
contains twice as much tar and nicotine per unit volume as does smoke inhaled from a
cigarette. It contains three times as much of a cancer-causing compound called 3,4
benzpyrene, five times as much carbon monoxide and possibly fifty times as much
ammonia.
Cigarette smoking is very harmful. It is harmful for both smoker and non-
smokers. People who smoke in public places just show how inconsiderate they are
towards others. Even the people who do not smoke in public places are selfish. They do
not consider the affect smoking might have on them and how that will affect their family

(How to Stop Smoking
Did you know that smoking one pack of cigarettes a day for ten years could reduce your bone density by 2 percent! And if this is not shocking enough read on ----Tobacco speeds artery damage. It promotes memory loss, Alzheimer's disease, causes rapid skin aging, anxiety, impotence, fatigue, headaches hoarseness of voice, smokers cough, peptic ulcers, senility, cramps in the legs stained teeth and nails, hiatal hernia, heart disease cancer, osteoporosis and the list can go on and on and on... ( from health magazine)
The best way to give up smoking is NOW! Stop smoking is the hardest thing for a smoker, that is why some people make fun of themselves "Stop smoking is so easy, see I already did it several times." If you did stop smoking, then congratulation. If you are still smoking, do not worry, there are some tips. First, drink plenty of fluids like fruit juices, vegetable juices, warm water throughout the day to help in cleansing the body and providing antioxidants to lesson the free radical irritation during the detox period. Secondly munch the carrot sticks cucumber strips, radish and plenty of raw vegetables as oral substitutes to deal with the psychological ties to smoking. Thirdly have a positive attitude towards health and life in general, stay busy to prevent boredom and to keep your mind off smoking. Maybe you can get another smoker, to stop smoking with you so that you can discuss common problems and get each other's support. Furthermore indulge in health treatments such as a massage, sauna, steam, and teeth cleansing to remove cigarette stains. Lastly if your craving to smoke arises, take a brisk walk, or drink tea or do things with your hands, or exercise, or go for a swim or just practice breathing & relaxation techniques, smile (even if you don't feel like) and be thankful that you are not smoking.
If you are a smoker, you have undoubtedly tried to quit and have found it difficult. Believe me, it is just a question of mind over body. If you follow the steps above, you will be success.

(Smokers and Smoking
Results of a recent study suggest that rebellious, risk-taking kids as young as 11 are more likely to smoke by the time they reach high school. According to the report, children who demonstrate these personality traits in the 5th grade are most likely to smoke in the 12th grade. Targeting smoking in high school students is important since studies have shown that adolescents who smoke daily in the 12th grade are likely to become established smokers as adults. Results of the study, published in the March issue of Preventive Medicine, show a strong association between rebelliousness in males in the 5th grade and daily smoking in the 12th grade. For example, the most rebellious males were three times more likely to become smokers than the least rebellious males. Risk-taking most strongly correlated with smoking among females, the investigators found. To be sure, a youngster who is a rebellious risk-taker is not necessarily destined to become a smoker. While these children may be may be more likely to smoke than their more conventional peers, the influence of family and peers also plays a role. The risk of smoking for a rebellious individual may either increase or decrease depending on whether his or her social environment also involves smoking parents, siblings, or peers. About 19% of 12th-grade students are daily smokers. Despite efforts to reduce the prevalence of smoking among adolescents, rates have climbed over the past decade

The Good Things of Cigarette Smoking?)
It is estimated that two hundred thousand smokers will die this year. This estimate is averaged out, based on the effects of smoking and the amount of people that smoke. Smoking causes many things to a smoker’s life, a smoker can acquire awful smells, diseases, and a waste of money. The abundant amounts of effects of smoking are overwhelming.
First, smokers create unpleasant smells to themselves and everything they own. Smoke itself is awful smelling and, when smoking smokers have to have a place to smoke such as there house and car. Therefore, when smoking in an enclosed environment, smoke is trapped inside. Since there is no other place for the smoke to go it lingers and makes everything smell dreadful.
Second, smoking creates many harmful diseases such as lung cancer, emphysema, heart cancer, and many more deadly diseases. The 2,000 known poisons in cigarettes are the contributors to the many diseases a smoker attains. Many smokers also obtain small effects such as smoker’s cough, wrinkles on his/her face, frequent colds, and diminished or extinguished sense of smell and taste. The deadly effects of cigarette smoking can cause a smoker to be hospitalized and cared for, for the rest of his or her life.
Third, the amount of money spent in a smoker’s life span is overwhelming. It is estimated that if a smoker smokes two cigarette packs a day and continues to smoke for ten years he or she will spend $23,725. Spending such a great amount of money lowers a smoker’s income drastically. Much of there time working is spent raising the funds to support there nasty habit. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on cigarettes a smoker could spend his or her money on other things

(The Meaning of Smoke
Sometimes people feel that things are better left unsaid. Such is the case in Chris Avellone's, smoke, which tells the story of two friends who have a good relationship until one speaks the truth that both had been hiding. The smoke in the essay can be looked at as a veil that is concealing the true feelings of the two characters. The setting, which is in a smoke filled bar, can be looked at as a secret hide away that the two friends go to. It is when Kyle starts to bring what is really going on that the conflict starts.
When the story starts, the two friends are at a bar playing darts and drinking beer. When Kyle start smoking a cigarette it is then that Dave starts to open up and let the audience know that the two friends have not seen each other in a while. He also starts to describe his friend physically paying special attention to his eyes. Throughout the story Kyle is very vague when answering Dave's questions about his new relationship. Finally he asks his friend if his girl knows about what was going on between the two of them. Dave tries a first to shrug the conversation off but it is at this point that smoke the cigarette is giving off is starting to make sense. "Smoke curled from his nostrils out onto the table, like some kinda dragon" (Avellone, 3). Throughout the entire story the smoke seemed to make Dave feel more comfortable. It seemed as if the presence of the smoke made him telling the story and him even being around Kyle okay. With the smoke curling from his friends nose the reader is able to get a picture that the smoke is starting to clear. It is only when the smoke seems to be clearing in his eyes, revealing both his and Kyle's true feelings that he started to get uneasy. At this point he attacks his friend and calls him all kinds of vulgar names. He says that he cannot see much because of the smoke and that at that point, "Kyle just faded out into the smoke in Shoop's" (Avellone, 3). We can see here that he knows he has lost his friend to the smoke, which is a representation of his repressed feelings. From his descriptions of Kyle as well as his annoyance at the relationship he is in, the reader knows that Dave is in love with his friend, but the smoke made it all right because no one could really see what was really going on. It wasn't until Kyle started talking about his feelings to see if Dave had told anyone that he realizes that he cannot hide behind the smoke forever. But rather than admit the truth, he would rather make a scene and embarrass his friend to prove his masculinity.
Not only did the presence of the smoke make Dave feel more comfortable about being there with his friend, the bar they were at made it okay as well. When describing the place, Dave says, "You can't see far in Shoop's 'cause of all the smoke, but I could see enough" (Avellone, 1). You can see that he has chosen this scenery because it is naturally a smoky place. He wanted to be there so that he could see his friend without anyone being able to see him. This is important to him because he knows that they can show their feelings through their eyes without anyone else knowing what's going on. He also describes his friend as having a "poker face", so that also helps out. He tells the reader that he has not seen his friend in a long time and that he was hoping, "things might go back to normal when we got to Shoop's, but there were too many people around" (Avellone, 1). With this statement the reader knows that Dave does have feelings for Kyle but that he does not want anyone to know that he thinks more of him than just a friend. He was hoping that no one would be at the bar, and even if someone was at the bar, he was hoping that the smoke would hide any shows of affection that might be otherwise seen in a well-lit place.
In the story smoke by Chris Avellone, the love story that ultimately ends in tragedy is told by a man who is too worried about others to let his own happiness come through. He takes his friend to the smoke filled bar in order to have some sort of privacy and in hopes that the setting will help hide more his real self. It is only when his friend shows his own feelings that Dave realizes that you can not run away from yourself

How to improve your English skills
My most important advice is to do something (anything), but above all have fun! Make it your hobby, not a chore.
There are many ways to improve your level of English, but only you can find the right way for you. Here are a few tips that might help:- Improve your Learning Skills
Learning is a skill and it can be improved.
Your path to learning effectively is through knowing
If you are not motivated to learn English you will become frustrated and give up. Ask yourself the following questions, and be honest:-
You know how much time you can dedicate to learning English, but a short time each day will produce better, longer-term results than a full day on the weekend and then nothing for two weeks.
Joining a short intensive course could produce better results than joining a course that takes place once a week for six months.
Here are some goals you could set yourself:-
Decide on a reward you will give yourself for fulfilling your goals for a month.
There are different ways to learn. Find out what kind of learner you are in order to better understand how to learn more effectively..
The visual learner
Do you need to see your teacher during lessons in order to fully understand the content of a lesson?
Do you prefer to sit at the front of the classroom to avoid visual obstructions (e.g. people's heads)?
Do you think in pictures and learn best from visual displays including: diagrams, illustrated text books, overhead transparencies, videos, flipcharts and hand-outs?
During a lecture or classroom discussion, do you prefer to take detailed notes to absorb the information?
!Learning Tip - you may benefit from taking part in traditional English lessons, but maybe private lessons would be better.
The auditory learner
Do you learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, talking things through and listening to what others have to say?
Do you interpret the underlying meanings of speech through listening to tone of voice, pitch, speed and other nuances?
Does written information have little meaning until you hear it?
!Learning Tip - you may benefit from listening to the radio or listening to text as you read it. You could try reading text aloud and using a tape recorder to play it back to yourself.
The Tactile/Kinesthetic learner
Do you learn best through a hands-on approach, actively exploring the physical world around you?
Do you find it hard to sit still for long periods?
Do you become distracted easily?
!Learning Tip - you may benefit from taking an active part in role plays or drama activities.
Other English Learning Tips
Travel to an English speaking country:-
Keep something English on you (book, newspaper or magazine, cd or cassette, set of flashcards) all day and every day, you never know when you might have 5 spare minutes.
If you are too tired to actively practice just relax and listen to an English pop song or talk radio station.

Dear Sara,
How are you? I hope you are okay. It's been a while since the last time we hang out. So, I was thinking of going to the mall this weekend, and do some shopping since the stores are on sales, and to catch up our news. I hope you will agree to come pick me up from my house.
Here are the direction to my house. Take Interstate 5 to the N 85th Street exit. (This exit is a couple miles north of downtown. N 85th Street runs only one way -- west.)
Then, take N 85th Street west all the way to the end. It ends in a "T" (actually, there's a fourth street in there, but nevermind) at 32nd Avenue NW.
After that, turn left (south) on 32nd Avenue NW. (32nd Avenue NW is the "90 degree" left. Don't take the "135 degree" left -- that's the irrelevant fourth street.) Take 32nd to NW 68th Street.
Finally, turn right (west) on NW 68th Street. We're in the third block, on the right, behind a low scalloped tan wood fence, as you head down a steep hill past a "Dead End" sign.
So, please reply and tell me when you going to pick me up. Do not be late cause the mall closes at 8. See you later Sara
