My family and I stood around the hospital bed staring at my Nonna Bellini. she appeared so shrunken and distorted , only a semblance of the robust farm women who once worked the fields and arm wrestled with her sons.she had just had her third stroke and was in a coma. my brother leaned over the bed and gently took her hand." Nonna" he whispered, "it's Paul". he turned to us in shock." she just squeezed his hand _"I noticed both my uncles turn away with tears in their eyes. I felt my chest tightens and wondered how much more sufferings can this women to endure. Nonna has been battling Alzheimer’s for years, and even though her will to live had diminished after my grandfather passed away, her body refused to die.
Holding Nonna's hand was the last contact we would have with her. we left the hospital and flew back to Toronto that day, only to discover that she had died as our plane was landing. Back in northern Ontario 24 hours later, I stood over the body of my grandmother and thought that, finally, she was at peace. Many of my friends , and relatives came to pay their respects, and as I stared at nonna I knew I would feel her loss
for years to come.

twelve years afterwards, the legacy of Maria Bellini lives on through my brother and I. we take great pride in telling stories about her to our friends. Even though are countless Bellini anecdotes, they all seem to convey the same message over and over again: that Maria Bellini was, and still is, a source of inspiration to us.her robust personality and good nature allowed us to put pure trust in her. her unconditional love of her grandchildren was extremely special and rare. not matter what antics Paul and I were up to, whether drawing pictures under kitchen table or rummaging through the cupboards for cookies, we knew that Nonna Bellini would never be angry with us.

the following stories are just amusing and dramatic, but also express the influence my grandmother had on my life. she taught me that self respect and honesty are two of the most important qualities to live by. her strength runs through the blood of all of my relatives who, in some way, were touched by Nonna's love.
