Initial police investigation found that the woman wearing a dress with Quranic writing on it was from Korea and not a Chinese, as earlier rumoured to be on social net****s.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the woman had just arrived in the country and bought the dress when she was in India.
Writing on his official Twitter account, Khalid said Police had begun investigating the case of the ‘makcik’ (aunty).
Dia Korean, baru sampai sini, beli baju tu di India. Biar kita siasat lanjut. Semua bersabarlah,” he had written.
(She’s a Korean who just arrived here and bought the dress in India. Let us investigate, please be patient everyone.)
Khalid dismissed allegations that cops were slow in dealing with the matter, adding that they were always aware of what’s happening and promised that action would be taken according to the provision of the Law.
Ada yg @PDRMsia dpt ambil tindakan segera, ada memerlukan masa utk kita bertindak secara rasional. Kami akan laksanakan tanggungjawab kami.
(There are things that Police can act fast, and there are things that require us to act rationally. We will carry out our responsibility.)
@PDRMsia tidak akan bias. Semua kesalahan akan disiasat tanpa mengira bangsa dan keturunan. Kita semua perlu hormat kpd Sistem Undang2 kita.”
(Police will not be biased. Wrongdoings will be investigated without taking into account race or background. We must respect the system of Law.)
In an incident yesterday, a photograph depicting a woman wearing a dress bearing Quranic verses was uploaded on social net****ing sites.
She was believed to have been at a shopping mall in Ampang, and the photograph also showed an Arab man reprimanding her, allegedly for wearing the dress.
Netizens then took to questioning her motive for wearing the dress, particularly Muslims who deemed it as offensive.
Last April 15, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the Quranic Text Publishing Act 1986 would be amended to combat the misuse of Quranic verses.
Under the amendment, clauses would be included to punish certain wrongdoings by imposing a fine of not more than RM50,000 or 5 years in jail or both.
