Make a chain of 9" or desired length at inside edge of each ear flap. Make two pompoms and attach one to each chain.
This hat/helmet works up fairly fast and can be sized up or down according to the size of needles used and yarn used. I had to use pins as I couldn't find any buttons yet. Will take a picture later with buttons and worn by a child(my granddaughter).
Materials:
1 skein knitting worsted weight yarn
2 - Ѕ inch buttons
Needles:
I used size 7 and 9 for the one shown. This fits a 2 - 3 year old.
You can also get a smaller size by using the following sizes:
Size 5 and 8 or size 4 and 6. Try size 3 and 5 with sport weight yarn.
Gauge: using size 9 needles
4 sts = 1"
4 rows = 1"
With smaller needles, cast on 61 sts.
Row 1: K1, P1, Repeat across row.
Row 2: P1, K1, Repeat across row.
Rows 3 - 6: Repeat rows 1 and 2.
Change to larger needles and work in stockinette stitch for 26 rows ending with a purl row.

Row 3: Sl 1, k24, slip 2 sts as if to knit, slip back on needle in the order slipped on and then k them tog, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, p24. P2tog, turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until 12 stitches remain on outer sides of decreases. Ending with a right side row.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 having 2 sts less between decreases every purl row until 11 sts remain on needle. Do not bind off but do fasten off yarn.
With right side facing you, use smaller needles to pick up 20 sts evenly along one side of hat, k 11 sts from larger needle, pick up 20 sts evenly along other side of hat. Cast on 21 sts for the chin strap(72 sts total).
Work in k1, p1, ribbing for 3 rows.

SOFT Worsted Weight Yarn
SOFT Baby Yarn
SOFT Baby Sport Weight Yarn
Fingering Yarn (use size G hook)
(I love using Red Heart SOFT worsted weight, Bernat Softee Baby, or Red Heart SOFT BABY but any will
work)
Chain 36 (chain 40 if using a baby yarn, or see below for other sizes).
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (35 sc).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first st, skip next st, *(dc, ch 1, dc) all in next st, skip next st, sc in next st, skip
next st, repeat from * to end of row, ending with (dc, ch 1, dc) in last st. This row should measure approx. 7
1/2 - 8 1/2 inches for full-term newborn size (adjust your hook size or number of beginning chains if
necessary).
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. *sc in first ch 1 st, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next sc st, repeat from * across (use back loops
only except for the 3 stitch groups on each end). Repeat row 3 for 34 more rows or until piece measures
approx. 10 - 10 1/2 inches for full-term newborn size. Fasten off. Piece should measure approx. 7 1/2 - 8
1/2 x 10 - 10 1/2 inches for full-term newborn (length should stretch to reach 15-16 inches, or you will need
to add more rows).
Join last row with beginning chain by stitching with yarn (in other words, join the two short sides of the
rectangle). Gather one end for top of hat. Weave in all ends. Add a small pompom or flower motif on top if
desired.
________________________________________________
For preemie sizes (use a soft yarn so it isn't too bulky), pattern may be reduced by 4 (ie: ch 32 or 28) to start
and make rows until the piece measures approx. 8-9 inches long or less as you go smaller (see the size
guidelines on the main pattern page). For larger sizes, pattern may be increased by 4 (ie: ch 40 or 44, etc.)
to start and increase the length accordingly. This pattern can be very easily adjusted to almost any
yarn or head size (preemie to adult)!
**You may also use fingering yarn -- use G hook and reduce or increase number of chains by 4's, just use
the rectangle measurement as your guide. The hat pictured above (right) uses sock yarn (fingering
weight) and has the addition of flower motifs on chains at the top instead of a pom pom. See my Hat
Toppers pattern for more than the traditional pom pom!
Materials: Yarn suitable or double yarn to give gauge of 4rows= 1” on 7 Ѕ mm needles.
Cast on 45sts.
ROW 1: K1, P1 across
ROW 2: P1, K1 across
Repeat last 2 rows 4 times more.
Knit 2 rows(garter st).
Continue in stocking st until piece measures 5”, ending with a knit row.
Next row: Dec 5 sts evenly across purlwise.
Next row: Knit
Next row: P2, P2tog across
Next row: K next row
Next row: P1, P2tog across
Next row: K next row
Next row: P2tog across
Next row: Knit
Repeat last 2rows once more.
Break yarn leaving enough yarn to sew up seam. Threading through last remaining sts, sew up back seam.
EAR FLAPS: Do twice.
Pick up and knit 10sts along inside of hat along garter row along the ribbing. Stocking st for 10rows
Next row: k2tog, k to last 2sts, k2tog
Next row: purl
Next row: repeat last 2 rows until 2 sts remain.
Knit an I cord with last 2 remaining sts.
I cord: using 2 dpn’s knit 2sts, DO NOT TURN. Slide needle though and wrapping yarn round knit 2 sts again, over and over until desired length.
