FINISHING
Attach earflaps on opposite sides of hat by sewing them under the brim and onto the back sides of the bobbles. Be sure that the wrong side of the hat and the right side of the earflap are facing as you sew.

Sew ties onto center right side of earflap at the point that it meets the brim.

Sew buttons on inside of hat so that they match up with YOs from earflaps when flaps are folded up inside hat.

Weave in all ends.

Thread ties through YOs in earflaps to wear them down, or button flaps up if it's not so cold!

Everything about this hat reminds me of a crisp spring day in Odessa: the color – a carbon copy of blooming lilac blossoms all over the city, the swirling lines – reminiscent of the sun poking through the clouds, the pearly beads – people’s smiles and sparking eyes greeting the coming summer months.

The Odessa hat is a satisfying project – knit entirely in the round and requiring only one skein of Rowan Cashsoft DK, there is minimal finishing and immediate wearability. The natural stretchiness of the yarn and pattern allow the hat to cover a range of head sizes – from 20” / 51 cm (large child) to 23” / 58 cm (large adult). The beads are a wonderful detail, although it’s important to point out that they are a choking hazard; please use your judgment. Omitting the beads and choosing an appropriate yarn color will most certainly please masculine Odessa admirers, too.

Materials
Rowan Cashsoft DK (57% extra fine merino, 33% microfibre, 10% cashmere, 142 yd / 130m per 50g ball): 1 ball Bella Donna 502.
Size 6 pearl-colored beads: approximately 150 (modeled hat uses 110).

US 6 (4 mm) double-pointed needles

Gauge
26 sts and 33 rows = 4” / 10cm in hat pattern knit circularly.

Abbreviations
BK1 – knit a bead into a stitch. Insert the needle into the stitch to be knit as usual, slide a bead close to the needle, and pull the bead through to the front as you complete the stitch. The bead should sit on the right leg of the knit stitch “V.”

Odessa hat pattern
Plain round: *ssk, k6, yo, k2, repeat from * until the end of round.
Beaded round: *ssk, k3, BK1, k2, yo, k2, repeat from * until the end of round.
Pattern
Before you begin, string 150 beads onto the yarn. As you knit, gently move them towards the other end of the ball as needed.

Using US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needle, cast on 110 sts. Join into round, being careful not to twist stitches. K3, p2 all the way around until work measures 1” / 2.5 cm from cast-on edge. K2 sts and place marker. The marker (not the tail of the yarn) is the beginning of all future rounds. Switch to US 6 (4 mm) needles. Begin Odessa hat pattern: work 2 plain rounds, *1 beaded round, 3 plain rounds, repeat from * until work measures 5.5” / 14 cm from cast-on edge.

Begin hat decreases (switch to double-pointed needles when there are too few stitches to stretch around the circular needle). Repeat each line of instructions for the entirety of one round.

1. ssk, k4, BK1, k1, yo, k2 (110 sts remain)
2. (sl1, k2tog, psso), k5, yo, k2 (99)
3. ssk, k5, yo, k2
4. sl1, k2tog, psso, k4, yo, k2 (88)

13. ssk, k2 (33)
14. ssk, k1 (22)
15. ssk (11)

Cut yarn, leaving a tail. Thread the tail through the remaining 11 stitches, pull the hole closed and weave the tail on the inside of the hat.

Terms Used:
k knit
k2tog knit 2 together
rnd round
st(s) stitch(es)

Directions
Cast on 61 sts. Being careful not to twist sts, slip the first cast-on st onto the left hand needle, so it sits next to the last st. Knit these two sts together. Pull yarn firmly to prevent a gap, then place a marker to mark the beginning of the round. (On each round, when you come to the marker just slip it to the right needle and keep knitting.)
Knit around and around until hat measures 9" from beginning, then work decrease rounds:

Decrease Rounds
*K10, k2tog. Repeat from * around hat. This will leave 55 sts on needle.
*K9, k2tog. Repeat from * around hat. This will leave 50 sts on needle.
*K8, k2tog. Repeat from * around hat. This will leave 45 sts on needle.
*K2tog. Repeat from * to last st, k1. This will leave 23 sts on needle.
Cut yarn leaving 8" tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle and run it through the remaining sts. Pull to close hole, then secure yarn, cut yarn and weave in yarn end.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Circumference: approx. 24 inches

MATERIALS

These hats were made using leftover balls of acrylic yarn in my stash. Any worsted weight acrylic yarn will work great. If you're using leftovers for a two-color hat, you will need approximately 150 yds/135m (single strand) of each color.

Suggested materials:
Red Heart Super Saver
Cherry Red #319; 1 skein
White #311; 1 skein

1 set US #9/5.5mm straight needles
Tapestry needle

GAUGE
15 sts/28 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch

PATTERN NOTES

pic 1^

pic 2^

Each time you change colors, bring the new color to the front and over the old color to create a neat, consistent border along the bottom edge of the hat. Add more colors for a more creative colorway.

Unlike many patterns that use short rows, it is not necessary to wrap the yarn around the stitch at the turning point when working these short rows. When it is time to turn the work around and work back in the other direction, the instructions will simply say "turn".

The longtail cast on is used for this pattern. If you are unfamiliar with this technique, excellent instructions can be found here.

This pattern is worked with two strands of yarn held together throughout.
