OB & HR Management
Overview
The doctoral program in Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management is primarily for those seeking research careers. Faculty research interests and course offerings span a considerable breadth. Topics of current faculty research include careers, decision-making, ethics, groups and teams, gender and diversity in organizations, goal setting, international management, job search, leadership, motivation, negotiation, organizational justice, performance appraisal, power and politics in organizations, privacy in the workplace, professions, recruitments, selection, self-regulation, training, workplace harassment, and union-management relations.
A major strength of the program is its flexibility in enabling doctoral students to develop a program of study that meets their objectives. Around the core courses, the individual can select the minor fields and additional course work (within the Rotman School of Management or in other graduate departments including industrial relations, psychology and sociology) or reading courses to develop one of several concentrations: Organizational Behaviour, Human Resource Management, and Methodology and Measurement.
Students are admitted into the doctoral program with an undergraduate degree, a master's degree, or an MBA. Those who enter the program with only an undergraduate degree are expected to receive the PhD in five years; those who enter the program with a master's degree should receive the PhD in four years.
Courses
MGT 3060 Advances in Human Resource Management
This doctoral-level course has two objectives. The first is to explore theoretical and methodological issues in the areas of employee selection, performance appraisal, and training. The second is to improve the student's skill in applying these theories and methodologies to organizational problems.
MGT 3062 Research Methods in Organizational Behaviour
This seminar is an advanced graduate course in research methodology that focuses on the different stages involved in the process of conducting scientific research. There are three main objectives in this course. The first is to provide students with an understanding of the methodological concepts required to conduct scientific research. The second is to develop the ability of students to use these concepts in critically evaluating research. The third is to develop students' skills using these concepts to design their own research projects. The course is designed to provide students with an understanding of important methodological concepts and the ability to apply them. Therefore, it will not cover specific statistical analyses.
MGT 3063 Advanced Topics in Organization Theory
This course is an advanced research seminar in organization theory. The material briefly covers classic approaches to organization theory as well as more contemporary perspectives. Because it is difficult to achieve a comprehensive review of current organization theory and research within the course time constraints, the option exercised here is to focus on these currently influential perspectives, bring students up to date on key developments in each area, and discuss the relationships between them.
MGT 3064 Advanced Topics in Organizational Behaviour
This seminar focuses on issues of individual behavior in organizations. Specifically, different views of the causes of behavior are addressed: the person, the situation and the interactions between them. Topics covered include: theories of motivation, including expectancy theory, goal-setting, manifest needs theory and social cognitive theory. The course also discusses research in work design and current developments in leadership theory.
MGT 3065 Meso Organizational Behavior
Organizational behaviour is widely defined as the study of individual, group and organizational-level behaviour, yet organizational researchers often focus on only one of these levels. The unit of analysis in micro OB is the individual; in macro OB it is the firm. Individual behaviour, however, is likely to be affected by the work group and organization, just as the work group and organization are influenced by the individual. This course introduces students to the study of meso OB, or the simultaneous study of multiple levels of organizational behaviours. Students learn multi-level theory and data analysis techniques, and read both classic and recent OB research and theory on topics spanning multiple levels, such as organizational climate, collective performance, organization hierarchies and power structures, and decision making in groups.
Degree Requirements
ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR
Minor in Social Psychology, Sociology or Strategy/Organization Theory
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Minor in Industrial Relations, Social Psychology or Strategy/Organization Theory
METHODOLOGY AND MEASUREMENT
Minor in Multivariate Statistics, Scale Construction (both given in the Faculty of Education)
Additional Courses
MGT 2600 Individual and Group Behaviour
MGT 2604 Organizational Change and Development
MGT 2606 Designing New Work Organizations
MGT 2609 Human Resource Management
MGT 2616 Advanced Negotiations
The 200-level courses may be taken for credit or audited, depending on the candidate's background and preparation. These are not course requirements for doctoral students.
Minor Field Requirements
Two minor fields are required. These requirements are satisfied by taking two graduate courses in each field. Everyone must minor in research methods. Depending on the individual's research interests, several options are available for the second minor.
Quantitative Methods (two or more courses)
Intermediate Statistics and Research Design (EDT 3666)
Computer Applications to Research Problems (EDT 1510)
or
Design of Experiments 1 (PSY 2001)
Design of Experiments 2 (PSY 2002)
Independent Research
By the end of the second year, students must have completed an empirical project that the faculty deems to be presentable at a major conference. The project should consist of a complete, regular-length manuscript (i.e., about 30 pages of text plus references, tables, figures, etc.).
Comprehensive Examinations
Comprehensive exams in OB, HRM and research methods are written after all course requirements are completed. This exam is usually taken at the end of the second year in the doctoral program.
The Dissertation
Through the doctoral seminars, working with faculty on research projects, and on their own small-scale research project, the students develop their ideas about a dissertation topic. This is developed into a formal proposal that is explained in a formal presentation to the faculty prior to its initiation. Recently completed dissertations include:
Robin Church: The Effects of Perceived Workplace Discrimination on the Basis of Sexual Orientation on the Mentoring Relationships of Gay and Lesbian Protégés, 2006
Marie-Helene Budworth: Vertical Transfer of Training: Can One Person Make a Difference?, 2006
Janelle Renee Enns: The Roles of Realistic Conflict and Relative Deprivation in Explaining Counterproductive Work Behavior, 2006
Deborah Mackenzie: Group Hope: An Antecedent of Groupthink?, 2005
Jelena Zikic: Job Loss as Career Growth: Predictors and Outcomes of Career Exploration and Job Search During Involuntary Career Transition, 2004
Neil Erik Fassina: When Motivation and Cognitions Collide: The Role of Justification Motives and Efficacy Beliefs on Individual and Group Decisions in Escalation Situations, 2004
