Materials: Sport Weight cotton 20 yards
10 star or heart shaped multi-colored pony beads * for holiday version see yarns used in samples listed below
size G crochet hook
elastic pony tail band
Yarns used in samples: Overture 4ply needlepoint cotton by Rainbow Gallery, split and used as two strands. Star shaped pony beads in bright opalescent multi-colors. Holiday version Lion Brand Chenille Sensations. Gold pony beads.
Substitutions include: Any sport weight yarn or thread including, Lustersheen, Jaimie by Lion Brand Yarns, Cotton 8 by Susan Bates, Red Heart Sport, (available at most Walmart, K-Mart or variety stores,) Ruby Mills rayon chenille (available through Annie's Attic), Lion Brand Chenille or Chenille Sensations.
Also try running a strand or two of DMC metallic embroidery floss with chenille or other thread/yarn. This way you can use smaller beads.
Thread 10 pony beads onto the cotton or yarn you are using. If you have trouble threading your beads, try using a dental floss threader. Thread yarn into loop of threader, then thread long end of threader into the beads.
Round 1: Make a loop with yarn and G hook, SC around the elastic band. Continue to SC around the band until there are 40 SC sts around the band. Stretch band slightly to fit stitches. Join with sl st into first SC. 40 stitches.
Round 2: Ch 7, SC in same stitch as joining sl st. , Ch 6, SC in same st., (ch 6, SC, ch 6, SC) in each of the next 2 sts of prev. round. * Ch 6, SC in the next stitch, ch 2, bring up 1 bead, ch 3, SC, in same stitch. (ch 6, SC, ch 6, SC) in each of the next 3 sts of prev. round.*
Repeat from * to * around, ending with Ch 6, SC in the next stitch, ch 2, bring up 1 bead, ch 3, sl st into first SC of round one.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
