King returns to Saudi Arabia with promises of change

As countries around the middle east fall to the people those watching in the wings are becoming increasingly nervous.

Many leaders around the world, but especially in the middle east, are wondering if their country will be the next to experience unrest or even revolution.

With that in mind King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has engaged some forward thinking.

King Abdullah travelled to the US late last year to undergo medical treatment.

During his absence Crown Prince Sultan returned to Saudi to replace him temporarily.

In the past Saudi Arabia has been an important ally to the US and various
middle east countries. The ever changing leadership of other middle east countries right now must lave Saudi in a precarious state.

With a ruling monarchy Saudi Arabia has no elected political parties or
government. This could mean that the people follow their middle east comrades.

Saudi Arabia and King Abdullah are rich though. 25% of the world's known oil
reserves are to be found in Saudi Arabia. This guarantees wealth and now it seems King Abdullah would like to share that wealth.

King Abdullah landed at Riyadh airport to a tumultuous welcome. Decorated
streets and happy people greeted the King. Saudi had seen protests earlier this month as the middle east began to tremble. Now it seems that his return could prove enough for the Saudi people.

Of course the promises he has made will help swing the deal in his favour. The king has promised to improve housing, the chances of experiencing study abroad and social security benefits by investing money in them. State run television said that the King will "increase the social security budget by 1 billion riyals and housing fund capital by 40 billion riyals, as well as a decision to make a 15 percent cost of living allowance permanent for government employees" Nice incentive?
The improvements announced also included:

Pardoning some Saudi nationals who had been jailed for failing to meet debt
obligations.

Paying their debt for them.

Paying aid for unemployed young people.

Paying tuition fees to young unemployed people so that they can study abroad.

Funding for literary clubs and social security funds.

As one of the few stable countries in the region currently, perhaps these measures will prove enough, at least for now.

However, with the King's advancing years, and people's quest for political freedom, a period of stability may not have longevity.
