Is Technology Taking Over our Lives?

In the Matrix movies, computers had taken over completely. Perhaps the popularity of those movies had something to do with the growing feeling that our technology is getting a bit out of control. Although scientists all over the world are hard at work to create real artificial intelligence, and some progress has been made, we're not at the point where the machines themselves can think and plot against us. However, the ability of other humans to use machines to control us is becoming more of a reality every day.

There's already a growing concern about such technologies as implanted biochips that can contain identity information and RFID tags that could broadcast an individual's personal information and preferences to billboards that would in turn bombard them with targeted advertising, a la Minority Report.

Last week, reports came out about a Japanese company that is developing remote controls to manipulate human movement and action. It sends an electronic signal to a special headset that causes the person wearing it to move in a specific direction. The purpose of the technology is to make video games more realistic, but it's not difficult to imagine the other uses to which such a technology could be put. You can read more about it (including a first-person account of what it feels like to be on the receiving end of the signal) here:

Of course, many folks feel that technology is taking over our lives in much more subtle ways. It's becoming more and more difficult to just "get away from it all" these days. With the proliferation of cell phones, Blackberries, laptop computers and quasi-universal Internet access, we're expected to keep in touch with co-workers and family members at all times. And our own expectations have changed, too. Twenty years ago, if you tried to call someone and he/she wasn't home, you just tried again later. Today, if a friend or loved one doesn't answer the cell phone and doesn't return your email messages, you get worried pretty quickly.

And how about answering machines (or, increasingly, voice mail built into your phone service)? Remember back in the old days, when you felt a little put off when you called someone and got a recorded message? Today, if you call someone who doesn't have a machine/service and the phone just rings and rings, that's off-putting - not to mention frustrating. How rude is that, to not provide a way for you to leave a message?
Has technology taken over your life? Here's a (humorous) survey to help you find out:

But on a more serious note, let us know what you think. Do you embrace all the new technologies, or are you beginning to feel a little like a Luddite (someone who loathes and fears new technological developments)? Do you think some of the new technologies, such as remote control of people, go a little too far? Or is it "all good"?
