Tables Turned
UP! up! my Friend, and quit your books;
Or surely you'll grow double:
Up! up! my Friend, and clear your looks;
Why all this toil and trouble?
The sun, above the mountain's head,
A freshening lustre mellow
Through all the long green fields has spread,
His first sweet evening yellow.
Books! 'tis a dull and endless strife:
Come, hear the woodland linnet,
How sweet his music! on my life,
There's more of wisdom in it.
And hark! how blithe the throstle sings!
He, too, is no mean preacher:
Come forth into the light of things,
Let Nature be your teacher.
She has a world of ready wealth,
Our minds and hearts to bless--
Spontaneous wisdom breathed by health,
Truth breathed by cheerfulness.
One impulse from a vernal wood
May teach you more of man,
Of moral evil and of good,
Than all the sages can.
Sweet is the lore which Nature brings;
Our meddling intellect
Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:--
We murder to dissect.
Enough of Science and of Art;
Close up those barren leaves;
Come forth, and bring with you a heart
That watches and receives.
We know that imagination, fancy, enjoying nature are some of romantic features. The poet starts with request and emphasis by the repetition of the word Prep. (Up! Up!) also in the first line there is an order (quit your books) the poet asking his friend to leave and stop reading books otherwise he will be fat because of sitting and reading books, here he is trying to be playful with his friend, in this line there is a light style. Then again there is a double emphasis in the 3rd line, he is saying leave your books and go to nature, when you are reading a lot you can not see clearly but by looking at nature, mountains, trees, sky, and beautiful places in nature, his looks will be clear. In the last line in the 1st stanza he is asking his friend why he is making trouble by reading these books, there is alliteration (toil-trouble)
In the second stanza, we can see the feature of imagination, the sun is above the mountain’s head which is beautiful to imagine. The consonants here become softer and smooth /s/ fricative, A freshening that light and soft not that light which gives a dazzle. Through all the long green fields has spread, the poet uses long vowels in this line means big distance you can think and see.
In 3rd stanza, he is telling his friend about books, they are dull, boring so leave them and come, give up yourself to nature and hear (oral affect) linnet (kind of bird) singing, and he is not only singing but there is a wisdom in his songs.
In 4th stanza, the poet says AND HARK! To pay attention to what he is saying how happy the bird singing, his songs are not happy but mixed with wisdom that makes you relationship strong with God. Come and think clearly how things are created and accept nature to teach you. /Let nature be your Teacher/ …this line is the link between the two halves of the poem.
In the 5th stanza, he says /She/ the pronoun she refers to nature, nature is there for you to come and enjoy it as it is, and there is a romantic feature which is to love and enjoy nature as it is not to interfere. Enjoy it with your heart and it will give you an idea to your mind in the same time. Natural wisdom is healthy because it is from nature; he is talking about nature as a whole and the way it teaches.
In the 6th stanza, there are many things in nature that teaches you such as wood, the poet saying to his friend the wisdom that you from wood is better than what you take from all wise men.
In the 7th stanza, he is saying those things in nature are not in need of human being interfere. What human beings do for nature is not good for it but it spoiled it, so the poet asks us not to interfere with nature and not to try to make nature better, if we do so in fact we’re doing evil things to nature.
In the 8th stanza, /Enough of Science and of Art/ he is saying enough of reading scientific books and art. Close those dead papers, they are like yellow leaves in a tree, you will get nothing from them. Come to nature and enjoy from your heart and learn from you mind.
The idea of this poem is: let nature be your Teacher.
