English uses a wide range of sounds . Each of these sounds may be stressed or unstressed
and delivered in one of a range of intonations according to the conventions of the particular variety of English being
learned. A flexible vocal system over which one has control seems to be an essential attribute of all spoken language
users. During the first year of life, infants produce a range of sounds and begin to indulge in vocal play. These
sounds will become closer and closer to the distinctive sounds, or phonemes, of their language community.
Phonemes are the distinctive sounds of a language. Children need to learn the set of phonemes that make up their
own language variety as well as how these are pronounced. As far as the young children acquisition of sounds is
concerned, two main question are worth being posed:
1 Are the early sounds made by infants universally the same? Or do the sounds produced vary according to the
language community that the child is born into?
2 In this early speech development, is there a constructive role for the caregiver : the person (or people) who
cares for the infant and who therefore provides most of the child's early social and linguistic contact?
Addressing these two questions requires approaching the stages which the sound acquisition by young children undergo
