زمن الماضي المستمر
what is the past continuous tense
ماذا نعني بزمن الماضي المستمر
First,the past continuous is often used to describe an action which happend for some time and then stopped when something else happened
هو الزمن الذي يشير إلى فعل أو حدث مستمر في الزمن الماضي أي أن هذا الحدث مازال في الإستمرار لمدة معينة في الماضي ثم انتهى وتوقف لحدوث شيء آخر
Example
مثال
He was watching television
هو كان يشاهد التلفاز
when the lights went out
عندما انطفأت الأنوار
1happened for some time:
He was watching television
2stopped when something else happened:
the lights went out
1- حدث باستمرار لوقت معين : هو كان يشاهد التلفاز
2- توقف عند حدوث شيء آخر : انطفأت الأنوار
Second,the past continuous is also used to describe an action that went on for longer than something in the past simple
ثانياً زمن الماضي المستمر أيضاً يشير إلى حدث أو فعل مستمر استمر في الماضي لفترة أطول من شيء حدث في الماضي البسيط

مثال
He was still studying at university
هو لا زال يدرس في الجامعة
when he got married
عندما تزوج
1went on for longer
he was still studying at university
2than the action in the simple past:
he got married
1- فعل يطول لفترة أطول : هو لا زال يدرس في الجامعة
2- أكثر من فعل في الماضي البسيط : تزوج
The keywords
هذه الكلمات من الممكن أن تدل في بعض الأحيان على زمن الماضي المستمر
when عندما
while بينما
as بينما
as just بينما
How to form the past continuous tense
كيف نصيغ زمن الماضي المستمر
to be(was, were) + infinitive + -ing
يتكون الماضي المستمر بإضافة الأفعال المساعدة
was أو were
قبل الفعل الأساسي و إضافة ing إلى الفعل المصدر
Examples
أمثلة
فلنأخذ مثال على الفعل play
I was playing
He was playing
She was playing
It was playing
نلاحظ أن الضمائر he و she وit و I تأتي مع الفعل المساعد was ثم نضيف ing إلى الفعل الأساسي
We were playing
You were playing
They were playing
playing
*نلاحظ أن الضمائر we و you سواء في المفرد أو الجمع وthey تأتي مع الفعل المساعد were ثم نضيف ing إلى الفعل الأساسي

Make Questions
تكوين أسئلة على جمل
في زمن الماضي المستمر
When we want to form questions for sentences that are in the past continuous tense we have to use
(were) , but only with certain subjects >> you , we , they
إذا أردنا تكوين أسئلة على جمل في زمن الماضي المستمر فإنه يجب استخدام الفعل المساعد were في السؤال ولكن فقط مع ضمائر معينة وهي you , we , they
And we have to use ( was ) with the rest of the subjects >> I , He , She , It
أما مع باقي الضمائر وهم I , He, She, Itفيجب علينا استخدام الفعل المساعد was في السؤال
Now, as we knew that the questions are two types
الآن .. كما نعرف وكما أخذنا في الدروس السابقة أن الأسئلة تنقسم إلى نوعان
The first one is
النوع الأول هو
Yes or no questions
أسئلة نعم و لا
In this type of questions, (was , were ) come first in the question
في هذا النوع من الأسئلة فإن was و were يأتون في بداية السؤال ويكون معناهم (هل) ثم نضع الضمير ثم الفعل مضاف له ing ونكمل باقي الجملة
Example
مثال 1
Was he playing football?
هل كان يلعب كرة القدم؟
عند الإجابة يعكس الفعل المساعد was مع الضمير فنقول عند الإثبات :
yes, he was
نعم, كان يلعب كرة القدم
أما الإجابة بالنفي سوف تكون:
No, he was not
لا ، لم يكن يلعب كرة القدم
Example
مثال 2
Were they playing football?
هل كانوا يلعبون كرة القدم؟
عند الإجابة يعكس الفعل المساعد were مع الضمير فنقول عند الإثبات :
yes,they were
نعم, كانوا يلعبون كرة القدم
أما الإجابة بالنفي سوف تكون:
No, they were not
لا ، لم يكونوا يلعبو كرة القدم

Now we will move to the second type
الآن سوف ننتقل للنوع الثاني وهو
The (wh) questions
أي الأسئلة التي تبدأ بـ wh مثل what, where, when...
Example
مثال 1
الجملة هي
They were watching TV when I came
كانوا يشاهدون التلفاز عندما أتيت
*هنا نريد أن نسأل بأداة الإستفهام ( ماذا )
فنقول ماذا كانو يشاهدون عندما أتيت ؟
فيصبح السؤال
What were they watching when I came؟
نلاحظ أننا وضعنا في البداية أداة الإستفهام what ثم استخدمنا الفعل المساعد were لأن الفاعل/ الضمير في الجملة they .. ثم وضعنا الضمير they ثم وضعنا الفعل watch + ing وأكملنا باقي الجملة دون وضع الجواب

الجملة هي
She was watching TV when I came
كانت تشاهد التلفاز عندما أتيت
*هنا نريد أن نسأل بأداة الإستفهام ( ماذا )
فننقول ماذا كانت تشاهد عندما أتيت ؟
فيصبح السؤال
What was she watching when I came؟
نلاحظ أننا وضعنا في البداية أداة الإستفهام what ثم استخدمنا الفعل المساعد was لأن الفاعل/ الضمير في الجملة she .. ثم وضعنا الضمير she ثم وضعنا الفعل watch + ing وأكملنا باقي الجملة دون وضع الجواب
Negative
النفي
When we want to make the sentence that is in past continuous negative, we have to use (weren't) , but only with certain subjects >> you , we , they
إذا أردنا نفي جملة في الماضي المستمر فإنه يجب استخدام weren't لنفي الجملة ولكن فقط مع ضمائر أو فواعل معينة
وهي you , we , they وترك الفعل كما هو مضاف له الـing
And we have to use (wasn't) with the rest of the subjects >> I , He , She , It
أما مع باقي الضمائر أو الفواعل وهم I , He, She, It
فيجب علينا استخدام wasn't لنفي الجملة وترك الفعل كما هو مضاف له الـing
*اختصار لكل هذا الشرح: هو أن نضيف not بعد الفعلين المساعدين was أو were وتبقى الجملة كما هي
Example
مثال 1
الجملة هي
she was preparing dinner
أصبحت بعد النفي:
she wasn't preparing dinner
* لاحظنا أننا أضفنا not بعد الفعل المساعد مباشرة ثم وضعنا الفعل الأساسي كما هو بالـ ing

الجملة هي
You were having breakfast
أصبحت بعد النفي:
You weren't having breakfast
* لاحظنا أننا أضفنا not بعد الفعل المساعد مباشرة ثم وضعنا الفعل الأساسي كما هو بالـ ing
