Whether you're knitting for an infant, child, teen, or adult, this cap is sure to please. It's completely reversible, and double knit for twice the warmth!

Sizes:
Infant (16"), Children's (18"), Women's (20"), Men's (22")
Numbers are actual circumference of head. Caps are about an inch less in diameter, to allow for a snug fit.

Materials:
- 1 skein elann.com Sock It to Me 4 Ply color A
- 1 skein elann.com Sock It to Me 4 Ply color B.
- 3.25mm (US 3), 16"-long circular needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)
- Double-pointed needles of same size
- Crochet hook, size G
- Stitch marker
- Several yards of smooth waste yarn
- Tapestry needle

Gauge:
24 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Abbreviations:
dec = decrease
dpn(s) = double-pointed needle(s)
k = knit
st(s) = stitch(es)
st st = stockinette stitch
tog = together

Instructions:
Begin with a provisional cast on: Crochet a chain about 10 stitches more than the number needed for the size you’re making. Tie a knot near the tail end of the crocheted chain, so you’ll be able to easily unzip it later. Turn the chain over so the “bump” is on top. Insert the tip of your circular needle through the bump and knit up a stitch using either of the Sock it To Me Collection Harlequin colors. Continue this “knitting on” cast-on until the required number of stitches have been cast on to your circular needle as follows:

With first color, cast on 90/102/114/126 st.
Place marker and join.
Work in st st for 6, 7, 8, 9 inches.

Next row: 6 times.
Next row: K around.
Next row: 6 times.
Next row: K around.
Continue decreasing in this manner, knitting one fewer stitch between decreases, until 42/48/54/60 st. remain.
Work dec round only until 6/6/6/6 st remain, switching to dpns when stitches will no longer fit on circular needle.

Break yarn, leaving a six-inch tail. Thread tail through tapestry needle and run through remaining st twice. Run needle down through top of cap. You can even tie a knot in it; since it will be buried between the two layers, no one will know!

Now, unzip that crocheted chain, leaving the live stitches to be picked up. It’s easier to unzip a few at a time, so you don’t lose any of them. Using the alternate color, follow the instructions again, knitting a second cap in the opposite direction of the first. When you’re finished, punch one cap into the other. Turn up a 2- to 3-inch contrasting cuff.

Experience: Intermediate.

Size: Adult, one size fits most.

Gauge: 25 sts = 4” (10 cm) in st-st.

Materials:
2 balls of elann.com Esprit in solid color (MC) (98.3% cotton, 1.7% elastic, 100 yards (relaxed) per 50-gram ball)
1 ball of Esprit Print (CC)
Set of 4 double pointed needles, size 4.5mm (US 7)
Circular needle, size 4.5mm (US 7), 29 inches long
Stitch markers, with 1 in a different color

Techniques Used:
M1 (right slanting) - Insert right needle from front to back into the horizontal bar that lies between the two stitches. Place it on the left needle. Knit into the front of this extra loop.
M1 (left slanting) - Insert right needle from back to front into the horizontal bar that lies between the two stitches, thus twisting the stitch. Place it on the left needle and knit into the front of this extra loop.

METHOD
Top of hat:
On circular needle, cast on 96 sts with MC. *Transfer 16 sts to double pointed needle, place m, transfer next 16 sts to same needle*. Repeat twice from * to * with separate dpns. Place contrasting m to mark beg of rnd. Cont on dpns as follows:

Pattern 1 (Pat 1)
Rnd 1: With MC, K across.
Rnd 2: With MC, *K1, K 2tog tbl (through back loops), K to 3 sts before m, k2tog, K1, sl m*, repeat from * to * to end of rnd.
Rnd 3-6: Repeat Rnd 1 and 2 twice.
Rnd 7: Change to CC, P across.
Rnd 8: With CC, repeat Rnd 2.
Repeat Rnds 1-8 until 12 sts remain. With CC, K2tog across rnd (6 sts remain). Cut yarn, leaving about 6 inches. With yarn needle, draw yarn through stitches, draw tight, and weave in end.

Bottom band:
With CC, pick up 96 sts evenly around outside edge using double pointed needles. K next rnd, placing m's every 16 sts, using special m to mark beg of rnd.
(Inc rnd): *K1, M1 (right slanting), K to 1 st before m, M1 (left slanting), sl m*, repeat from * to * to end of rnd. K next rnd. Repeat these 2 rnds once. Then cont in Pat 2 as follows:

Pattern 2 (Pat 2)
Rnd 1: With MC, P 1 rnd.
Rnd 2: K across, following inc rnd above.
Rnd 3: K 1 rnd, knitting sts onto circular needle. Continue working on circular needle.
Rnd 4: Repeat rnd 2.
Rnd 5-8: Repeat rnd 3 and 4 twice.

With CC, K 1 rnd. Next rnd, work inc rnd above. Repeat these 2 rnds once.
With MC, repeat pat 2 once.

*With CC, K20 sts, place m, k20 sts, sl m*, repeat from * to * to end of rnd. Repeat inc rnd. K 1 rnd.
Repeat inc rnd.

With MC, P 1 rnd. Work inc rnd. K next 6 rnds without increasing.

With CC, (Dec Rnd): *K1, k2tog tbl, K to 3 sts before next marker, K2 tog, K1, sl m*, repeat from * to * across rnd. K 1 rnd. Repeat dec rnd once.

With MC, P 1 rnd. Work dec rnd above. *K next rnd. Repeat dec rnd*. Repeat from * to * once.

With CC, K 1 rnd. Work dec rnd once.

With MC, P 1 rnd. Work dec rnd once. K 1 rnd. Repeat dec rnd once.

Ribbing:
Rnd 1: With CC, *K2, K2tog twice*, repeat from * to * to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: K1, P1 across.
Rnd 3: Repeat Rnd 2.
Rnd 4: With MC, *K1, P 1 for 22 sts, K2tog twice*, repeat from * to * twice, K 1, P 1 to end of rnd. (You have worked 6 decreases.) Continue K1 P1 ribbing until ribbing measures 2 inches.

With CC, K1, P1 ribbing for 2 rnds. Bind off as to knit. Finish off and weave in ends.
