Dayflower Hat is knitted from the top down in 6 equal sections. Both dayflower and cable motifs are cascading from the crown down and finished with double ruffle edge. The double ruffle edge covers the back of the neck and adds style to the front. It is a good hat for patients going through chemotherapy or someone who simply needs a soft hat. It can be worn year round, day and night, indoor and outdoor, because of Esprit and Esprit Print’s softness and hugging quality. Dayflower motif is from “The Best of Knitter’s Magazine”, P.54 - Dayflower Daydream by Eugen Beugler with modification.

Experience:
Intermediate.

Size:
Adult, one size fits most.

Materials:
2 balls of elann.com Esprit or Esprit Print (98.3% cotton/ 1.7% elastic, 100 yards (relaxed) per 50-gram ball).
Set of 4.5 mm (US 7) double point needles, or size required to obtain gauge.
One 4.5 mm (US 7) 16” circular.
One 5 mm (US 8) 16” circular needle.
6 slip ring markers.
Cable needle.
Yarn needle.
Fine waste yarn in contrast color.

Gauge:
Measured over lace pattern 30 sts and 44 Rs = 4” x 4” completely relaxed.

Stitches and Techniques Used:
2/2FC: sl 2 sts to cn (cable needle) and hold in front, k2, k 2 from cn.
M1: make one st.
1. Place the tip of the left needle under the horizontal strand of yarn that connects the stitches of both needles, from front to back. (The strand of yarn forms a loop on the left needle.)
2. Insert the tip of the right needle into the back of the loop, from right to left, and knit it. (Knitting into the back of this loop will twist the st and prevent a hole forming.)
SSK: a left-slanting single decrease.
1. Slip 2 stitches separately to right needle as if to knit.
2. Insert tip of left needle into fronts of these stitches, from left to right. Knit them together. One stitch has been decreased.
SK2P: a left-slanting double decrease.
1. Slip 1 stitch knitwise.
2. Knit next 2 stitches together.
3. Pass the slipped stitch over the k2tog.
Kf&b: knit into front and back of stitch.
YO: Yarn over.
2X: two times.

Lifeline:
Thread a yarn needle with a length (about 3 times circumference of knitting) of scrap yarn (which is finer than the main yarn). Draw this yarn through all sts, leaving a long tail at each end. Be careful not to wrap the lifeline around the knitting needle. Do not insert the lifeline through any markers.

METHOD

Crown of the hat:
Cast on 6 sts with dpn, distributed over 3 dpn and carefully join without twisting sts, knit one round. The hat has six equal sections, 1 st for each section. The following instruction is for 1 section only. Work these instructions for 6 times total on each round.
R 1: yo, p1 (2 sts)
R 2: k1, p1 ( 2 sts)
R 3: yo, k1, p1 (3 sts)
R 4: k2, p1 (3 sts)
R 5: yo, k2, p1 (4 sts)
R 6: k3, p1 (4 sts)
R 7: yo, k3, p1 (5 sts)
R 8: k4, p1 (5 sts)
R 9: yo, k4, p1 (6 sts)
R 10: k5, p1 (6 sts)
R 11: yo, p1, 2/2FC, p1 (7 sts)
R 12: k1, p1, k4, p1 (7 sts)
For easy working, place slip marker on the last st of each section (purl st), use different color of slip marker for the last section’s last st, to mark end of round. You can move the slip markers up after every several rounds you knit.
