1- تستخدم للاشارة بأن شيء ما يتبع ما هو مكتوب غالبا ما تكون قائمة أو خطبة. مثال:
These were Julius Caesar's final words : '' Et tu Brute''.
2- نستخدمها ايضا لتقديم عبارة يمكن ان نستخدمها كملخص للجملة.
The solution was obvious: get out.
3- يمكن استخدامها ايضا لعمل موازنة بين خاطرة - فكرة او عبارة عكس أخرى
Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning: red sky at night, shepherd'd delight.

Write out the following sentences adding a colon in the correct place.
1- As I left the house mum said just three words ''Do your best''.
2- I remember Martin Luther King's words '' I have a dream''.
3- There were so many things in the cupboard a pair of gloves, a scarf and a handbag.

المعلومات التي تكون عندنا موجودة بين الاقواس هي معلومات يمكن حذفها ويكون معنى الجملة كاملا بدونها.
المعلومات التي تحتويها الاقواس تشرح- توضح - الجملةالرئيسية كما في المثال التالي:
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English dramatist and poet.
في نقاط يجب مراعاتها عند استخدام الاقواس:
1- دائما بنستخدم قوسين. إذا فتحت قوس لازم اتذكر اغلقه)
2- إذا كانت الاقواس موجودة في نفس مكان علامات الترقيم التابعة للجملة الرئيسية فأن علامة الترقيم تأتي بعد القوس الثاني.
Don't forget to take with you some money ($5) , some books and some sweets.
3- أول كلمة بين الاقواس تكون بل capital letters إذا كانت محتوية على جملة تامة معناها واضح بمفردها) والنقطة التي تنهي هذه الجملة تكون فبل القوس الثاني.
The paperboy delivered our newspaper to the wrong house last week.(This is the second time he has done that). Please ensure it does not happen again.
