1- للشرطة استخدام مماثل للاقواس حيث انها تستخدم لفصل معلومات ليست جزءمن المعنى الرئيسي للجملة.

2- نستخدم شرطة واحدة قرب او عند نهاية الجملة لتلخيص او تأكيد ما يود المؤلف قوله.

3- تربط الشرطة بين سلسلة من العبارات الغيرمترابطة.

4- في الحديث \الكلام المباشر نستخدم شرطة واحدة للاشارة إلى أن المتحدث غير رأيه بخصوص ما كان ينوي قوله.

موضوعنا اليوم عن: The hyphen
هي ايضا شرطة لكنها اقصر من ال dash ولها 3 استخدامات رئيسية:
1- نستخدمها للفصل بين سيلبل كلمة موزعة على سطرين كتابة متاليين.
يعني بنستخدمها للربط بين جزئين للكلمة معا عندما لا يكون هناك مكان كاف لانهاء الكلمة في سطر الكتابة.
لا يتم وضع ال hyphen بشكل عشوائي في الكلمة بل يجب ان تكون بين 2 سيلبل او بين صوتين. نقسم بين ال double letters مثل كلمة lad-der
2- نستخدمها كذلك للفصل بين اجزاء الكلمات المركبة.
The arrow was well-aimed.
3- تستخدم ايضا لربط كلمات في العبارة.
The boy had an unfortunate couldn't -care-less attitude.
تستخدم ايضا لخلق نوع من التأثير
Speak s-l-o-w-ly so that the old lady understands.
تستخدم ايضا لتجنب الابهام \الغموض الناتج من استخدام كلمتين متشابهتين في الكتابة والنطق.

نستخدمها ايضا للفصل بين صوتين متحركين يأتيان في نفس الكلمة لكن لايلفظان معا.
